Techniquest's History

Techniquest is the UK’s longest established Science Centre. Founded in 1985, it grew from a shop front via a pre-fabricated industrial building to the UK’s first purpose-built Science Centre in 1995. Sited in a converted heavy engineering plant, this building was designed by Paul Koralek of ABK Architects, one of the UK’s leading firms.

Uniquely amongst UK Science Centres, Techniquest builds nearly all its own exhibits. This capability has led to us becoming one of the leading commercial exhibit builders in the UK, with over 200 contracts in more than 30 countries.

Techniquest was the first science centre in the UK to have Governing Member status in the Association of Science and Technology Centres (ASTC). In 1999 Techniquest’s exhibits were awarded “Millennium Product” status by the Design Council of the UK because of their excellence.

“Techniquest has a most interesting set of exhibits including a number of ground-breaking originals, some outstanding reworks of existing ideas and some really complex units. They make all their own. They keep more complex exhibits up and running than anyone else I know of.”
Peter Anderson, Author of “Before the Blueprint - a guide to constructing a Science Centre
