Support from Cassidian
Cassadian, an EADS company, is a worldwide leader in Global security solutions and systems. Cassidian is working in partnership with Techniquest to deliver innovative educational projects for secondary school pupils across Wales. Techniquest is designing, developing and delivering two new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) based programmes to 11 to 19 year olds across Wales. The projects form part of the Welsh Government’s Reach the Heights project.
Making Tracks (Key Stage 3 workshop for 11 to 14 year olds)
Developed from an initial concept from a team of young engineers on the Cassidian graduate programme, Techniquest has provided some modifications, improvements, and further resources
In this workshop, pupils are set a task to design and build a prototype vehicle to fit certain specifications.

Eye in the Sky (Key Stage 4 workshop for 14-16 year olds)
In this workshop, pupils take on the role of launching unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to solve a series of challenges. Pupils explore the technology used in these UAVs, including thermal imaging and infrared.
Beacon for Wales
Techniquest is one of five partners in the Beacon for Wales, with Cardiff University, University of Glamorgan, Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales and BBC Cymru Wales. The Beacon for Wales is one of six pilot Beacons for Public Engagement funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils, Research Councils UK and the Wellcome Trust. Its aim is to help support, recognise, reward and build capacity in Welsh universities for public engagement work across Wales.
Reach the Heights
Techniquest is a joint sponsor in a £49m new initiative for young people in Wales, called Reach the Heights, which is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) with match funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and associated sponsors. As part of this scheme, Techniquest will be developing and delivering STEM programmes through seven regional Hubs in the convergence areas across Wales for 11 – 19 year olds who face, or who are at risk of, disadvantage or under-achievement, to improve their career opportunities.
Association of Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC)
Techniquest is a member of ASDC, the UK’s network of science and discovery centres which supports its members towards their common goals of engaging all in science.
Cardiff University
Techniquest and Cardiff University signed a strategic partnership in 2006. This provides a framework to further their respective goals in engaging public and school audiences in science. Techniquest and Cardiff University have worked on a number of projects as part of this strategic partnership, including the Beacon for Wales, Cardiff University’s MSc in Science, Media and Communication, a joint science tent at the National Eisteddfod and the Wales Gene Park.
Wales Gene Park
Techniquest is responsible for the education arm of the Wales Gene Park which aims to generate an understanding of the ways in which genetics is perceived and understood by the general public. It develops and delivers education and training initiatives on genetics and associated social and ethical issues for school teachers, students and others.
We have run a number of high profile events over the years, with the University of Glamorgan and other partners, notably a Citizen’s Jury, Designer Babies: what choices should we be able to make, and The National DNA Database on Trial, both funded by the Wellcome Trust.
