Photo Competition

Focus on Patterns

Win a digital camera for your school!

Patterns and More Patterns is the theme of this year’s Wales Maths Week photo competition….and the best entries in each age group will win a digital camera for their school.

It’s the third year of the Mathcymru photocompetition…you can see some of the previous entries here. The theme this year gives tremendous scope for keen photographers. You might capture man-made or natural features displaying tessellations, fractals, or repeating shapes. Perhaps you might capture a butterfly sitting on a flower, or the patterns on brick pathways, or even on the kitchen wall!

There are separate categories for different age groups… under 7, 7–11, 11–14, 14–16, and over 16. In each case the pupil must explain why they have chosen the subject they have for their photograph.

The mathcymru co-ordinator, Sian Ashton, says “The competition encourages pupils to visualise maths. They can apply their knowledge of mathematical principle to choose a subject for their photograph, and think about how to turn their idea into a pleasing picture. There is great opportunity for children taking part to plan their work and to reflect on how to present ideas in an exciting and novel way”.

Entries must be uploaded below by Friday November 6.
