Science on the Maes (05 August 2008)

Cardiff University has joined forces with Techniquest to help visitors to the Eisteddfod appreciate the significant work carried out by its academic staff and students.

A range of exhibits illustrate everything from medical engineering to archaeology, psychology to climate change. They include a computer model which shows the likely effects of a rise in sea level on the UK, Wales, and even the Eisteddfod field in Cardiff, Wales and the UK. There’s a visual representation of how we can fail to spot a significant change in a view, if interrupted for a split second, and representations of medical imaging equipment.

Alongside these new displays are some traditional Techniquest hands-on exhibits. Techniquest’s Operations and Outreach Manager, Shan Richardson says visitors to the Eisteddfod can experience some of the most popular exhibits: “They are able to fire a hydrogen rocket, see an object roll uphill, experiment with balance, colour and camouflage, and play with puzzles covering subjects such as maths, biology, and even Enstein’s general theory of relativity!”

“Our aim is to engage people with science and motivate them to learn more, and this is a great opportunity to work again with a University which an international reputation for research.”

Students recruited from Cardiff University will be on hand to help visitors get the most from their Techniquest experience at the Eisteddfod.
