Techniquest is embarking on a new strategy to expand its range of outreach for schools across Wales in support of the science and maths curriculum.
We plan to offer more staffed and unstaffed services together with useful notes and resources. These services will ultimately address all Key Stages. During 2007/08 we have added various services including new Kits, Challenge workshops and Shows.

Starlab: A travelling planetarium KS1 & 2
Starlab is Techniquest’s portable planetarium that brings the stars to your school without you shivering outside on a winter's evening!
A presenter sets up the inflatable dome in your school and delivers a full day of sessions about the sky at night and the planets of the solar system. Each show is tailored to the ages and abilities of your pupils, from KS1 to KS3. Each show lasts about thirty minutes including time for questions and discussion.
Starlab can accommodate up to 30 children plus teachers/adults. It can be set up in a school hall and taken down during lunchtime if required.
The area must be indoors and have sufficient headroom (4.2m) and floor space (7.5m X 7.5m). 240v ac mains power supply required.

Discuss DNA - The National DNA Database KS4/A2 level
Discuss DNA is a presenter-led game for up to 30 pupils per session which
encourages debate about the social and ethical issues surrounding the
National DNA Database.
This new game for KS4 and AS/A2 pupils is proving popular with teachers and
students, and is available for schools in Wales now.
The resource helps students to recognise that scientific developments have
an effect on the society in which they live.
Topics include:
- DNA profiling
- Forensic science
- Gene ownership
- Developments in genetic technology and their impact on society.
The activity also aims to enhance students’ discussion and debating skills.
Challenge Workshops
The NEW Challenge Workshops are designed to stimulate and motivate pupils as well as provide informal support for teachers in their delivery of the National Curriculum. These workshops offer a dynamic range of new challenge activities for pupils, from forces to sound, light to electricity.
Challenge workshops can be adapted to suit your groups’ needs and the average workshop length is between 30 and 45 minutes.

Kits - suitable for KS2
Kits are a collection of easy-to-use hands-on activities that are specially designed to motivate and interest pupils of all abilities. The kits cover many important areas of the curriculum and encourage pupils to explore, discover and test.
Each kit is accompanied by comprehensive pre and post extension materials and teacher support notes which guide you through a host of learning initiatives. The kit is easy to transport from school to school and we encourage schools to work together to share the resource.

Shows
Exciting and memorable presenter-led shows can be performed in your school hall or in the classroom with all the props and materials provided. Every show covers a selected area of the curriculum. The style of each encourages pupils to question ideas, and stimulates interest in science and maths. Shows for KS2 pupils can be adapted, using different equipment, for KS1 or year 7 pupils on request. Shows provide an excellent resource for transition phase events.
