Techniquest’s Teacher Scientist Network (Wales) aims to link active research scientists with teachers in local schools, to give an added dimension to National Curriculum and A-Level Science. Long-term partnerships are formed between scientists and teachers, with the scientist making regular visits into school to give lectures or run workshops. To supplement the partnerships TSN (Wales) provides continuing professional development (CPD) and Masterclasses around Wales.
There are three main aspects to TSN (Wales)
1 Partnerships
There are currently more than 30 partnerships between scientists and teachers as part of TSN (Wales), in Cardiff, Bangor, Aberystwyth, Wrexham and Swansea.
2 CPD
Our CPD courses are designed for teachers to gain new ideas in teaching various aspects of science. A wide-range of CPDs are available in a range of locations.
3 Masterclasses
Usually half-day courses hosted by one of the TSN (Wales) scientist partners, Masterclasses are designed to bring teachers up-to-date with their specific area of science. They comprise lectures and interactive workshops, where teachers can gain first hand experience of the techniques currently being used in research. To date Masterclasses have been held in medical genetics, cloning and cosmology.
The Teacher Scientist Network (Wales) Small Grants Scheme
TSN (Wales) offers grants of up to £500 to support the development of new activities. Active members of the network can apply for funds to transform ideas into education, you might want to buy equipment to enhance the partnership in your school, or you might want to devise a new CPD for teachers all over Wales.
The next round of grant applications is open. Below are the forms for applying for a grant along with the guidelines. Please download and complete. The deadline for applications is 31st May 2007.
