Lightyear inspired workshop

Thu 11 August 2022

12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Techniquest has teamed up with Disney and Pixar to celebrate the science that inspired the movie “Lightyear”.

The new movie is the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy. It follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Techniquest and science centres and museums around the UK are set to go beyond infinity, discovering the science behind the intergalactic science fiction adventure.

These drop-in sessions are included in your Techniquest entry ticket, and are running between 12pm and 4pm on select days throughout the summer holidays.

Working as an astronaut

While wearing astronauts gloves, or heat gloves for adults, you must screw in a few nuts, bolts and screw fixings using the tools provided. Can you complete the task? And if so, how quickly can you do it?

Keeping fit as an astronaut

Astronauts must regularly exercise to keep muscle mass in space. What’s harder, exercising with or without resistance bands? See if you have what it takes to keep fit in space!

Rocket Launching

Customise a rocket with K’NEX pieces, attach it to the guidance line and then launch it. Will your rocket be able to fly?

Finding exo-planets

Can you find the 5 exo-planets hidden in Techniquest? Each exo-planet has a letter, can you work out what they spell?

In Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear, Buzz is assigned a robot companion, Sox the cat. Sox is intelligent and has a mind of his own. Real life robots are not yet as intelligent or independent as Sox, but they can still be very useful and are advancing all the time. Can you write a program for a robot to follow a path to the end? The robot needs to stop before the end, so it doesn’t fall off the table (or fly away into space).

Every hero has a beginning, start your journey of discovery at Techniquest!
