Community Engagement and Outreach Assistant

We’re looking for a friendly, energetic individual with a passion for public engagement to support our busy summer outreach programme. Whether you’re experienced in working with families and children or looking to build your skills in informal education, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact in your community.

About the role

You’ll be supporting the delivery of hands-on science workshops and public engagement activities, working directly with children, families, and community members in a range of outreach settings including libraries, festivals, and community venues. This role involves helping participants complete engaging STEM-based tasks, ensuring everyone has a high-quality and inclusive experience.

You’ll also play a key role in setting up and packing down sessions, collecting feedback, and representing Techniquest in the community.

Please note: An enhanced DBS check is required for this role. This will be arranged by Techniquest for the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with workshop participants in a lively, inclusive and approachable manner.
  • Help deliver a range of hands-on STEM activities across South Wales.
  • Assist with setup, reset and clean-up of outreach equipment and materials.
  • Promote safe, accessible, and welcoming environments for all attendees.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for Techniquest at community events and venues.
  • Support feedback collection and informal evaluation.
  • Work flexibly to meet programme needs (including occasional early starts or weekend events).

About you

We are looking for a candidate who:

Maintenance & Estates Manager

Techniquest — a leading science discovery centre in the heart of Cardiff Bay — is looking for a hands-on, strategic, and proactive Maintenance & Estates Manager to lead the management of our building, grounds, and infrastructure. With thousands of visitors every year, our estate plays a vital role in delivering safe, accessible and inspiring experiences. This is a unique opportunity to play a central part in shaping and supporting our physical environment, while championing sustainability and compliance.

What the role involves:

  • Take ownership of the upkeep, safety, and contribute to the sustainability of the entire Techniquest site.
  • Lead our in-house maintenance team and manage external contractors to deliver efficient and effective facilities services.
  • Develop and implement a strategic Estates Management Plan covering lifecycle planning and capital improvement projects.
  • Oversee all building systems (HVAC, lighting, plumbing, CCTV, etc.) using our Building Management System (BMS).
  • Ensure legal compliance and best practice in Health & Safety, building maintenance and risk management.
  • Contribute to exhibit maintenance, public space enhancements and emergency planning.
  • Play a key role in environmental sustainability, energy usage monitoring and carbon reduction initiatives alongside our Environmental Impact Manager.
  • Supervise planned and reactive maintenance, maintain accurate documentation and lead on procurement for maintenance-related services.
  • Act as a key contributor to exhibition fit-outs and capital works alongside internal and external partners.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has proven experience managing estates or facilities in a public-facing environment such as a museum, gallery or visitor centre.
  • Possesses strong leadership skills with experience managing maintenance teams and contractors.
  • Has a solid understanding of Health & Safety regulations, statutory compliance and building systems.
  • Brings technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.
  • Is confident using Building Management Systems (BMS) and office software.
  • Is practical, proactive and solutions-focused, with strong communication and planning skills.
  • Holds or is willing to obtain a relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH or NEBOSH).
  • Brings a collaborative, flexible approach with the ability to work cross-functionally.

Techniquest — a leading science discovery centre in Cardiff Bay — is looking for a skilled and versatile Maintenance Technician (Building) to join our Maintenance & Estates team. You’ll help keep our building, exhibits, and outdoor spaces in excellent working order so that our thousands of visitors enjoy a safe, engaging and inspiring experience every day.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong general maintenance experience who enjoys variety and takes pride in high standards.

What the Role Involves

  • Carry out day-to-day maintenance and repairs across the building, infrastructure, exhibits and outdoor areas.
  • Oversee building systems like lighting, plumbing, heating and ventilation, ensuring optimal performance and energy efficiency via the Building Management System (BMS) to ensure everything runs efficiently.
  • Conduct regular safety and compliance checks, including daily pre-opening health & safety inspections.
  • Maintain and repair interactive exhibits to keep them safe, accessible and operational for visitors.
  • Manage and maintain tools, workshop space and technical equipment to a high standard.
  • Complete minor repairs across disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, painting and basic electrics.
  • Support routine checks such as water temperature, fire alarms and chlorination.
  • Look after outdoor spaces and living displays, including feeding and caring for small live animals (e.g. ants and fish).

You’ll also:

  • Play a key role in ensuring that every visitor enjoys a safe and high-quality environment, directly contributing to our mission of making science accessible to all.
  • Support the Maintenance & Estates Manager in coordinating third-party contractors and planned preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Undertake Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) — training will be provided if not already certified.
  • Carry out COSHH assessments and contribute to maintaining risk documentation and audit readiness.
  • Maintain accurate technical and health & safety records for compliance, and provide reports to the Maintenance & Estates Manager and/or Director of Experiences when required.
  • Work safely at height using appropriate access equipment — training and PPE will be provided.
  • Due to the varied nature of our visitor experience, this role requires a flexible approach and the ability to respond to unexpected maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Actively contribute to a safe, inclusive workplace by working within Techniquest’s Values and Behaviours Framework.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties relevant to the role

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a multi-skilled maintenance background, with relevant trade qualifications.
  • Brings hands-on experience across multiple disciplines (e.g. plumbing, electrics, carpentry, mechanical, decorating and gardening).
  • Is confident diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs in a live, operational environment.
  • Can work independently and prioritise tasks in a busy, fast-paced setting.
  • Understands Health & Safety legislation, and is familiar with risk assessments and compliance checks.
  • Has experience maintaining workshop tools and equipment.
  • Communicates well with colleagues and enjoys being part of a collaborative team.
  • Has a valid UK Driving Licence.
  • (Desirable) Holds an IPAF or equivalent licence to operate MEWPs and/or speaks Welsh.

Techniquest — a leading science discovery centre in the heart of Cardiff Bay — is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Operations Administrator to support our Operations and Education teams.

You’ll provide first-class customer service to a diverse audience of families, schools, and visitors while ensuring smooth day-to-day operations behind the scenes. This is a vital and varied role that places you at the heart of the visitor experience. As the first point of contact for many of our guests, you’ll help create a welcoming, inclusive and informative environment that supports our mission of making science accessible to everyone.

No two days are the same. You could be coordinating school visits in the morning, resolving a ticketing query by lunch, and preparing resources for a weekend birthday party in the afternoon.

What the role involves

  • Act as the first point of contact for telephone, email and online enquiries ― including group bookings, birthday parties and educational events.
  • Manage and process bookings using our ticketing platform (DigiTickets) and CRM system, maintaining accurate customer data.
  • Respond to messages via social media inboxes and public review platforms in a professional and timely manner.
  • Support the Admissions & Retail Manager to troubleshoot and escalate issues with DigiTickets.
  • Liaise with internal teams and suppliers to coordinate birthday party and school event logistics.
  • Monitor and order essential supplies, including stationery, kitchen items, party materials and catering.
  • Maintain records of incident reports, booking logs, and visitor feedback to inform service improvements.
  • Provide cross-team support to Operations and Education teams, including mail handling, data entry and supporting public engagement activities.
  • Support the implementation of safeguarding, health and safety, GDPR, and access procedures.
  • Participate in the development of administrative procedures and attend cross-team coordination meetings.
  • Use a range of digital tools to support daily tasks ― including DigiTickets, CRM databases, Microsoft Office, and internal platforms.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths (Grade C or above)
  • Has experience in a customer service and/or administrative role
  • Is a confident IT user with good knowledge of Microsoft Office and database systems
  • Has strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Communicates professionally and confidently with visitors, schools and colleagues
  • Is quick to learn new systems and processes, and thrives in a team-oriented environment
  • Brings a proactive, solutions-focused mindset and manages a busy workload independently
  • Is flexible and reliable, with a willingness to work occasional weekends or evenings

Desirable:

  • Experience using CRM systems or ticketing platforms (e.g. DigiTickets)
  • Experience in a museum, science centre, or education setting
  • Understanding of the public engagement role of science centres
  • Welsh language skills

You’ll report directly to the Admissions & Retail Manager and work closely with colleagues across the Education, Marketing and Operations teams to deliver a seamless visitor experience.
