Research Placements & Experiences provides over 1,000 Year 12 students with the opportunity to work alongside STEM professionals on live research projects.

Techniquest is very excited to be managing the placements for Wales again this year, supported by the Nuffield Foundation and STEM Learning.

The prestigious Steve Bowden Award being presented to winner Julia Krokosz, in 2023.

Year 12 students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects at a state-maintained school or college in the UK are eligible to apply.

There are two types of placement we offer:

  • Research Placement (NRP)

    • 2-week collaboration with a STEM-related placement organisation expert
    • Work on a live research question or area of development
    • Produce a scientific research report and poster
    • Opportunities to contribute to your host’s current projects
  • Experience Placement (NEP)

    • 5 day explorations with industry experts
    • Identify essential skills for employment in STEM
    • Produce a workbook log for the duration of your placement

There are bursaries available for students from low-income households, entitled to free school meals or discretionary payments or lived/living in local authority care.

In addition to this, regardless of whether they are eligible for a bursary, all students will receive reimbursements for travel costs during their placement!
