Techniquest

School trips to Techniquest

At Techniquest in Cardiff Bay, there are more than 100 hands-on exhibits, which are ideal for child-centred learning and investigation.

There are so many options now to explore different aspects of the world around us through the new exhibits — and through some old favourites too, of course.

Pupils who visit Techniquest can also attend an interactive show in the Science Theatre, visit the 360° digital Planetarium, where they will be inspired by a view of the night sky, or get practical hands-on experience with a workshop in our newly-refurbished KLA Lab.

School visits are so well organised that teachers can simply focus on the learning experience; upon arrival, Techniquest staff explain the logistics of the visit to make sure the day runs smoothly.

Planetarium

  New 4K projector

Enter Techniquest’s digital Planetarium and take a journey through the Universe — discovering stars, planets and distant galaxies!

Pupils learn to identify stars, planets and constellations that can be seen from Earth, then venture beyond the Milky Way, towards the great wonders of the Universe. Presenters can zoom into stars and planets, pan out to detailed craters of distant moons, and display stunning phenomena such as spiralling galaxies, in order to consolidate and contextualise pupils’ learning appropriately and fuel a passion for cosmology and astronomy.

Progression Step 3 Key Stage 2

Planetarium shows are an additional £2 per pupil.

The KLA Lab

New — our new-look KLA Lab, funded by the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Bring your pupils to experience being a real scientist! Each workshop is 45 minutes long. Choose from one of the three available workshops.

These workshops are delivered by the fabulous team at SparkLab Cymru.

Please note: We are only able to run one of the three following themes per school day. The first school to book a Lab workshop on a given day will get to choose which theme is running that day.

Sci-Spy Squad

Come and help us solve the mystery of the missing diamond.

Students will be using a variety of forensic experiments to help us find out “whodunnit”!

Progression Step 3 Key Stage 2

The Magic of Science

Is it magic or science?

Students will step into the shoes of a wizard in this workshop, as they observe and carry out a range of ‘magic or science’ experiments!

Can they change something’s colour, or temperature, or even make something fly?

Progression Step 3 Key Stage 2

Colour Chaos

Explore the colourful world of science!

Discover the amazing spectrum of colours in science through a range of demonstrations and hands-on experiments!

Progression Step 3 Key Stage 2

FAQs

  •   What is Techniquest?

Techniquest is an educational charity, with a science centre in Cardiff Bay. Our mission is to embed science in Welsh culture through interactive engagement. We provide a range of services to schools and teachers to complement formal education provision in Wales and work extensively with public audiences.

  •   Where can I park?

We are pleased to be able to offer all of our visitors discounted parking with Q-Park, our preferred parking partner.

The Q-Park operates the Cardiff Bay car park in Pierhead Street which is around 8 minutes walk from Techniquest.

We have agreed a special discount rate for our customers of 15% off all pre-bookings.
Pre-book and guarantee your space here using the code TECHNI15.

There are also nearby pay-and-display car parks on Stuart Street and Havannah Street. Please do not park on Havannah Street itself.

We regret that there is no parking on-site at Techniquest.

  •   Who is it for?

Techniquest is suitable for all ages! We do have special events for certain groups, however — see Toddler Days and Home Educator days.
