We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact and inspiring planet-friendly choices.

At Techniquest we embed sustainability in everything we do. From greener operations throughout our building to the experiences and educational content that we create, we’re making long‑term, positive changes that support a greener future for our community.

We focus on making responsible choices to reduce our own environmental impact, advocating for climate education and knowledge-sharing, and continually learning how we can do better.

In 2025 we began a carbon audit project, working in collaboration with external partners to monitor and significantly reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. As a science discovery centre, we will be sharing our impact and learnings with purpose and transparency, aiming to inspire others to do the same.

What we’re already doing

  • Reduce, reuse, recycle, repair

We’re reducing non-essential, single-use plastic items used across our exhibition and retail space, as well as working collaboratively with our partners at Coffee Mania, helping to reduce landfill waste.

We’ve introduced clearer signage, more accessible recycling points and better sorting processes, including food waste caddies for school trip lunches following an audit exercise with Love Where You Live. We’re also registered as a litter picking hub with Keep Wales Tidy, so people can borrow all the kit they need to carry out a safe clean-up in our local area.

We reuse and repair wherever possible, thanks to our in-house maintenance team. Our exhibits and educational resources are built to last — some of them are over twenty years old!

  • Monitoring and reducing our impact

To understand our environmental footprint, we’re tracking our energy use, travel patterns and resource consumption by carrying out a carbon audit in consultation with Auditel. This helps us identify areas for improvement and set realistic goals to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. Our Carbon Reduction Plan will be ready in summer 2026 and we’ll be sharing our progress and learnings along the way.

We’re continuing to upgrade our building systems to improve energy efficiency. We’ve already switched to LED lighting where possible and installed solar panels to generate our own electricity. In the 2025-2026 financial year, we generated 108,350 kWh — enough energy to boil the kettle to make almost 4 million cups of tea.

  • Education and engagement

We explore sustainability through our exhibits, activities and events. We want visitors of all ages to leave with a clearer understanding of how everyday choices and global issues can make a difference to our planet.

At Techniquest, you can learn how to reduce water consumption with an exhibit created in partnership with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, or play a game which explores where our food travels from, or find out how to protect our pollinators in the sensory garden. We also invite external charities and organisations to host a ‘sustainability station’. We regularly welcome RSPB Cymru who share information with our visitors about protecting habitats so our wildlife can thrive.

Behind the scenes, our education team deliver inspiring workshops, shows and projects for schools and community groups, all about how we can protect our planet.

  • Collaborating and learning

Collaboration and shared learning are key to making a collective impact. We’re a member of Climate Cymru and we work in collaboration with several like-minded organisations, including Keep Wales Tidy, Love Where You Live and Transport for Wales.

We also regularly host conferences and events with a focus on sustainability, providing space for ideas and connections to grow. In 2025 we welcomed Project Seagrass for the UK Seagrass Symposium, with keynote speakers, panel discussions, and workshops led by some of the world’s leading seagrass scientists. And in summer 2026 we’ll host Climate Challenge Cymru in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy. Inspired by The Earthshot Prize, this school innovation challenge invites learners to showcase their creativity, passion, and ideas for a better planet.
