At Techniquest, sustainability is a core pillar of our organisational future.
We are committed to developing our environmental strategy with purpose, integrity, and transparency. As a science discovery centre, we recognise our unique responsibility to help people understand the world around them, including the environmental issues we all face. Our aim is to inform and inspire positive climate action through the many ways in which we interact with our different audiences, and we are proud to contribute to the wider global efforts in building a sustainable future for all.
As a demonstration of this commitment, our dedicated Environmental Impact Manager will lead our sustainability efforts and champion this aspect of our strategy. This role will ensure sustainability is embedded in our decision making. All core members of staff are now required to complete environmental training as part of their ongoing development, ensuring that sustainability is embedded across all areas of the organisation.
To drive our efforts collaboratively, we will establish a Sustainability Committee made up of staff members from across different departments. This cross-functional team will help shape and monitor our environmental goals, fostering a shared sense of responsibility and innovation.
We will invest in a full, comprehensive environmental audit which will result in a detailed carbon reduction plan to guide our long-term actions. This plan will include creating measurable targets across factors such as energy, waste, water and plastic reduction. To ensure accountability, we will track our progress against key performance indicators and continually review progress to ensure we are making data informed decisions.
We are committed to significantly reduce non-essential, single-use plastics across all areas of our operation. While this will take time, we will work closely with suppliers to seek out sustainable products and packaging to ensure we can offer sustainable alternatives to those customers who visit our gift shop.
Techniquest aims to be a real leader in environmental education and a trusted source of climate knowledge for all of our audiences. As part of our public engagement efforts, we will further introduce sustainability themes into our public and school programming. We will deliver new, impactful, climate change-focused shows and educational content in our Science Theatre and other Techniquest spaces, helping to inform and inspire audiences of all ages to understand the science behind environmental issues, and to take positive action.
We believe that our role extends beyond our organisation. That’s why we also intend to engage in third party advocacy work within our exhibition spaces, raising awareness and promoting environmental responsibility among our visitors.
To support sustainable travel, we actively encourage our staff and visitors to use public transport, walking and cycling routes where possible.
We intend to make our sustainability journey open and transparent. We will keep our community informed and engaged through regular updates via social media, our website, email newsletters, and on-site signage within our centre.
Techniquest is committed to continuous improvement, long-term investment, and building a sustainable future: for our organisation, our community, and our planet. In doing so, we will act intentionally, innovate boldly, and inspire others to join us on this journey.
